THE NILE TRADING COMPANY presents a unique wool area rug collection of Egyptian Kleems, Egyptian flat weaves, which have been made for centuries in a rural region of the Nile Delta. The wool comes from a special type of sheep raised in the desert of Upper Egypt. The wool fibers are thick and long, which produce a strong yarn that withstands constant wear. The Nile Trading Company offers a collection of ten designs. The designs are available in standard colorways as pictured in our catalog or can be custom colored using our color swatches. Choose from five standard sizes: 4’ x 6’, 5’ x7’, 6’x9’, 8’x10’, 9’x12’ and 64 colors. Rugs may also be made to your custom design specifications up to 13 ft. wide. Skilled weavers provide a consistently high quality and dependable service.
THE PERUVIAN COLLECTION of double woven and double warp faced carpets from Ayacucho are handmade of the finest quality highland wool and llama wool from the Puno region in southern Peru. There are a handful of ancient regions where textiles were first woven. Today the different villages and regions throughout the Andes retain their unique weaves, design motifs, and colorways. The wool is hand dyed using the highest quality Swiss dyes to be chosen from 87 contemporary colors or you may choose to specify custom colors. These reversible rugs can be placed over broadloom without the common problem of having the rug "walk." They feature seamless widths from 26" runners up to 8 ft. Sizes over 8 ft. in width are woven to match & hand seamed.
The Ayacucho quality features double sided rugs with a design on one side and a stripe pattern on the reverse. The two ply yarn woven double fold or a single yarn woven four-fold to produce a tight weave and uniform surface. The Traditional Quality is a single yarn, reversible rug. The reverse is a mirror image of the front. This is a lighter weight weave, which is an authentic Peruvian hand woven rug at a lower price point. Repp Weave/ Regular & Heavy: The Repp weave is a traditional weave that can be used to create any number of grid and geometric designs. The Repp weave is offered in regular and heavy quality, both of which offer a striking visual texture.
The Jordan Collection of area rugs and pillows is the product of a joint venture between the Jordan Design and Trade Center and the Bani Hamida Weaving Center. The Bani Hamida were nomads who roamed the rugged mountains and valleys of what is now the Kingdom of Jordan. The Bani Hamida project was started by the Save the Children Foundation in 1985 to provide women with employment while reviving their ancient rug weaving craft. Currently the project employs more than 450 women in 13 villages, in home based weaving, which permits them to take care of their children and families. The Jordan Design and Trade Center employs women of the Al-Hweitat tribe as well as women in the villages of Rimoun and Jerash. The mosaic designs have been taken from restored church floors on Mt. Nebo, and the burial site of Moses. Other design motifs come from traditional ancient scripts and Bedouin textile embroidery with its bold, geometric patterns, which are perfect for rugs and pillows.
